Abstract
Urban areas are the focus of the 21st-century sustainability development activities. The intensive urbanization and development of cities, limited resources and the climate change have exacerbated the need to make cities more holistic concerning environmental safety, social inclusion and financial sustainability. The given paper dwells upon such concept as urban sustainability within the framework of the triple bottom line (TBL) model, the emphasis being on the interdependence of the ecological quality, social well-being, and economic activity. The paper is based on the Indian case studies such as the East Kolkata Wetlands and the green infrastructure plan in Pune, that provide a way through which cities can implement an integrated sustainability through policy, planning and governance innovations. It draws a conclusion with a recommendation of mixed-method approaches and methods of funding and indicators that need to be taken into consideration in response to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 11) and Smart Cities Mission in India.
